Rheumatology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine focused on the evaluation and treatment of people with arthritis and musculoskeletal pain as well as autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), vasculitis and inflammatory muscle disease. Arthritic conditions such as gout and pseudogout as well as osteoporosis are within the realm of rheumatologic evaluation and treatment. Osteoarthritis is the most common arthritic condition. Rheumatologists also deal with the vast array of aches and pains frequently noted in patients without inflammatory arthritic conditions.
