Achilles Tendon

Meet Doctor Ronald B. Resnick, an Orthopaedics foot and ankle surgeon at Concord Orthopaedics and what he has to share about Achilles Tendon ruptures.
"Achilles tendon ruptures have become increasingly more common in the past few years. Basketball, football, soccer, baseball, and volleyball are common sports in which I see Achilles tendon ruptures. Pickleball has become very popular, and I am seeing many Achilles ruptures from Pickleball.
Early diagnosis is the most important factor in treating these injuries. The most common story is that while participating in an activity, one feels and even hears a pop or snap in the back of the ankle and lower leg. Most people turn around as it feels like they were kicked in the back of the leg. If you experience this, you need to be evaluated sooner than later.
Most Achilles tendon ruptures can be diagnosed with a proper physical examination. Occasionally, we will order an MRI to confirm the rupture, but this is infrequent.
If an Achilles tendon rupture is diagnosed in the first week or two, the injury can be treated with or without surgery. If there is a delay in diagnosis, surgery is usually the only good option. The decision to proceed with surgical or non-surgical treatment is based on one’s health and baseline activity level. Surgical and non-surgical treatment of Achilles tendon ruptures are both accepted treatment options, and both usually result in return to baseline activities
So, if you experience a pop or tearing sensation in that back of your ankle or lower leg, please call today at (603) 224.3368 and we can discuss the best treatment for you."
