Diagnosis and treatment of spine disorders are important for individuals of all ages: children, adolescents, adults and senior citizens. Treatment is individualized based upon the diagnostic condition, age and lifestyle of the patient. Initial treatment often focuses on nonsurgical options and may include physical therapy, medications, braces, injections and education. The surgeon can choose from a multitude of available surgical techniques, including newly developed minimally invasive approaches when indicated. Spine problems may involve the spine itself or any of the surrounding ligaments, tendons and muscles as well as the discs between the vertebral bodies. Low back or neck pain may be caused by degenerative disc disease, a herniated or bulging disc, arthritis of the joints that hold the vertebrae together or simple muscular strain. Symptoms may also radiate into the arms or the legs as a result of nerve compression in the cervical or lumbar spine. When a slip of one vertebrae on another occurs, it may be as a result of a stress fracture in adolescents or degenerative changes in the adult population. This condition is known as spondylolisthesis and may cause back pain as well as leg pain. Other problems of the spine may occur as a result of a significant injury, tumor or infection.
