Rheumatology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine focused on the evaluation and treatment of people with arthritis and musculoskeletal pain as well as autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), vasculitis and inflammatory muscle disease. Additionally, arthritic conditions such as gout and pseudogout as well as osteoporosis are within the realm of rheumatologic evaluation and treatment. Osteoarthritis is the most common arthritic condition. Rheumatologists also deal with the vast array of aches and pains frequently noted in patients without inflammatory arthritic conditions. Treatment remains multidimensional, including medications, physical therapy, injections, exercise, occupational therapy and at times, surgical procedures. The treatment is always tailored to the specific disease, the patient's condition and their needs. Advances in the treatment of arthritic and immunologic conditions have occurred and progress in evidence-based research continues. Substantial improvement in the mobility and function of joints allows maintenance or improvement in quality of life for people with arthritic diseases.
