Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes the bones to weaken and makes them more likely to break. Osteoporosis itself is painless but the fractures it may cause are painful and may result in deformity, disability and even death. The causes of this thinning of bone are numerous, ranging from medication to malignant conditions of the bone marrow. A detailed history, physical exam, blood work and radiological procedures are often necessary to determine the cause of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is often treatable through adjustments in medication, diet and exercise. Identification of patients at risk for fractures is extremely important so that preventative measures can be initiated.

Densitometry (DXA), a noninvasive radiological test, is the current standard for measuring bone density and is available at Concord Orthopaedics. DXA may be used to diagnose osteoporosis, follow medication usage that can cause osteoporosis, and/or monitor response to osteoporosis treatments (learn more)

Osteoporosis is a major health threat. In the U.S., about 10 million individuals already have osteoporosis and almost 34 million are estimated to have osteopenia or low bone mass which places them at risk for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the cause of over 1.5 million fractures a year including hip fractures, vertebral fractures (spine), wrist fractures and fractures at other sites.
