Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced medical imaging technique that creates clear and detailed cross-sectional images of the body without the use of x-ray radiation. The images are produced using a powerful magnet, radio waves and computer technology. MRI requires specialized equipment and expertise and allows evaluation of some body structures that may not be as visible with other imaging methods.
How does it work? The human body contains an abundant amount of water. The water molecules or hydrogen atoms act as tiny magnets. The MRI magnetic field aligns these tiny magnets. Once a radio wave frequency is applied, the hydrogen atoms release energy that transmits a signal. A powerful antenna collects the signals. The signals are collected and processed by powerful computers to generate detailed images of the body. The exam is painless and there are no known harmful effects from MRI.
