Before Surgery
You will receive a call from the Orthopaedic Surgery Center to schedule a time for Pre-Surgery Testing (PST), if necessary. Tests that might be done during your PST visit include blood work and/or electrocardiogram. You will meet with the nurse to review your health record. The nurse will also explain the routine and answer your questions.
If Pre-Surgery Testing is not indicated, you will receive a telephone call from one of the Orthopaedic Surgery Center nurses to talk with you about your medical history, medications, allergies, etc. and any special needs you may have.
Some questions that will be asked during PST (visit or call):
- Have you had surgery before? What and when?
- Past and current medical problems, i.e. heart, lung, or circulation problems, diabetes, high blood pressure?
- What medications are you taking? Please bring all medication you are taking in their own containers at the time of PST visit.
- Do you have any reactions to drugs, food, or pollen-type allergies? What happens to you with these allergies?
- Have you or a member of your family ever had any problems with anesthesia?
An anesthesiologist will meet with you the day of your surgery to discuss your anesthesia options and any questions or concerns you may have.
